A: For monochrome cube systems, the monitor cable length should be left at 3 meters. For monochrome NeXTstations, you can use the 3-meter cable, but nothing longer. The cable length is limited by the sound/keyboard interface line. The video can go an almost unlimited distance, which depends on the quality of the coax used. The sound/keyboard interface is synchronous (separate data and clock lines), and cable lengths longer than 3 meters cause excessive clock/data skew. Also, the cable is built to exacting standards to meet FCC requirements, and modifications may cause the system to become non-compliant.
In color systems, the color monitor may be moved an essentially arbitrary distance from the computer. One way of doing this would be to connect the computer/soundbox/monitor cable
to coaxial lines via a 13W3-to-BNC adaptor like the one shipped with early NeXT color systems. Depending on the monitor, you might need to engineer an adaptor for the monitor end of the coax lines.
However, even in color systems, the keyboard must remain within 3 meters or less of the computer system.
